The world's largest-ever municipality network has pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions for a sustainable future at a congress held in Seoul.

The congress of the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI), which kicked off on Wednesday, adopted the Seoul Declaration yesterday to underline priorities for sustainable urban development. The declaration, signed by 203 cities of 87 countries around the world, is expected to serve as a global guideline for cities seeking to reach eco-friendly goals.

Seoul Mayor Park Won-Soon has been elected to chair the ICLEI until 2018. During his three-year office term, Park will preside over the 1,200-member world body's major executive committee meetings as well as take part in the United Nations General Assembly.
