This advice is aimed at riders who can consistently get up behind the boat, ride stably, control foil height, and begin surfing the wake without a rope. They recommend prioritizing a foil upgrade before changing boards, as the front wing has the greatest impact on performance. Most beginners start with a larger, stable wing around 1500 cm², which is forgiving but can feel slow once skills improve. For a performance boost, downsizing the front wing by 300–500 cm²—often to the 1000–1100 cm² range—can increase speed, responsiveness, and carving ability. Riders doing more pumping or wake transfers may also benefit from a slightly taller mast (75–85 cm), while keeping the stabilizer unchanged initially to avoid adding too many new variables.

When it’s time to upgrade the board, most riders begin on something around 4.5 ft (~137 cm), which is stable but less responsive. Moving to a smaller board around 110 cm offers a more reactive feel, improved pumping, and better carving without being overly challenging. Placement of the mast on a shorter board is important—starting near the back and moving forward with experience prevents handling issues. They caution against dropping to extremely small boards too quickly, as that can hinder progression.

Benchmarks for knowing you’re ready to upgrade include: popping up directly onto foil from the water (not riding on the surface first), maintaining control without “bucking bronco” instability, riding the wake without the rope for extended periods, and exploring pumping or wake transfers. The ideal progression is to master the basics on the beginner setup, downsize the front wing for increased performance, optionally extend mast height if pumping is a focus, and then move to a smaller board for maximum maneuverability and wake versatility.
