നീർനായ പുഴയിൽ കടുവ Adorable Otters: An Up-Close Look

നീർനായയുടെ പേരിലൊരു നായയുണ്ടെന്നേ ഉള്ളു . അവർക്ക് നായയുമായി ഒരു ബന്ധവും ഇല്ല. വെള്ളത്തിലും ജീവിക്കുന്ന സസ്തനിയായ ഇവർക്ക് കൂടുതൽ ബന്ധം ബാഡ്ജർ , മിങ്ക് തുടങ്ങിയ ജീവികളോടാണ്. (വെരുകു വിഭാഗക്കാരായ പാം സിവറ്റിനെ മരപ്പട്ടിയെന്ന് വിളിക്കുന്നതിലും ഇതുപോലെ ഒരു ശരികേടുണ്ട്.)
ലുട്രിനെ (Lutrinae) ഉപകുടുംബത്തിൽ പെട്ടവരാണ് ഒട്ടർ എന്ന് പൊതുവായി പേരു വിളിക്കുന്ന മാംസഭുക്കുകളായ സസ്തനികൾ എല്ലാം. smooth-coated otter (Lutrogale perspicillata) ആണ് നമ്മുടെ നാട്ടിൽ സാധരണ കാണുന്ന നീർനായ. പേരിൽ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നതുപോലെ തന്നെ വെൽവെറ്റ് പോലെ മൃദുവായ നീളം കുറഞ്ഞ രോമങ്ങൾ നിറഞ്ഞ ദേഹമുള്ളവരാണിവർ. ഒരുകാലത്ത് പല പുഴകളിലും വെള്ളക്കെട്ടുകളിലും കോൾപാടങ്ങളിലും ഒക്കെ ഇവർ ധാരാളം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
നീർനായകളുടെ ജീവിതം വെള്ളത്തിൽമുങ്ങിയും പൊങ്ങിയും ഒക്കെ ആണല്ലൊ. പ്രത്യേക രോമപ്പാളികൾ ഉള്ളതിനാലാണ് വെള്ളം നനഞ്ഞ്കൂടുതൽ സമയം ചിലവഴിക്കുമ്പോഴും ശരീരം കൂടുതൽ തണുക്കാതെ രക്ഷപ്പെടുത്തുന്നത്. നീളം കുറഞ്ഞതും വളരെ അടുത്തടുത്തായുള്ളതുമായ രോമാവരണമാണിവർക്കുള്ളത്. മുകളിൽ നമ്മൾ കാണുന്ന രോമാവരണം കൂടാതെ അതിനടിയിൽ നീളം കുറഞ്ഞ അത്രതന്നെ രോമങ്ങളും ഉണ്ട്. മേൽഭാഗത്തെ രോമങ്ങൾ മാത്രമാണ് വെള്ളത്തിൽ നനയുന്നത്. അടിയിലെ രോമാവരണം നനയാത്തതാണ്. രോമങ്ങൾക്കിടയിൽ വായു കുടുങ്ങിക്കിടക്കുന്നതിനാൽ ആ പാളി ഒരു ഇൻസുലേറ്റർ കവചം പോലെ പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. അത് കൂടാതെ ജലസഞ്ചാരങ്ങൾ എളുപ്പമാക്കും വിധം ഭാരം കുറക്കാനും സഹായിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. നീർനായകൾ കരയിൽ കയറി ഒരു കുടച്ചിൽ കുടഞ്ഞാൽ തന്നെ പുറത്തെ നനവ് കുറേ പോകും. കടൽ നീർനായകളാണ് ഏറ്റവും അടുത്തടുത്ത് രോമങ്ങൾ ഉള്ള മൃഗം. ഒരിഞ്ച് തൊലിയിൽ ആറു മുതൽ പത്ത് ലക്ഷം എണ്ണം വരെ രോമക്കുഴികൾ ഉണ്ടാവും അവർക്ക് . നമ്മളെപ്പോലെ ഉഷ്ണ രക്തജീവികളായ ഇവർ വെള്ളത്തിൽഏറെനേരം കഴിഞ്ഞാലും നനഞ്ഞ് തണുത്ത് വിറക്കാത്തതിന് കാരണം ഇതാണ്. കടൽ വെള്ളത്തിൽ കഴിയുന്ന മറ്റെല്ലാ സസ്തനികൾക്കും ( തിമിംഗിലം , ഡോൾഫിൻ, സീൽ, വാല്രസ് എന്നിവയ്ക്ക് ഒക്കെ ) തണുപ്പ് തടയൻ സഹായിക്കുന്ന ബ്ലബ്ബർ എന്ന കൊഴുപ്പ് പാളി ദേഹത്തുണ്ടാകും. എന്നാൽ കടലിൽ കഴിയുന്ന ഇനം നീർനായകൾക്ക് അതില്ല. അതിനാൽ തന്നെ ശരീരം ചൂടായിനിലനിർത്താൻ ഉപാപചയ നിരക്ക് കൂട്ടണം. അതിനായി ധാരാളം ഭക്ഷണം കഴിക്കണം , ഏറെ സമയം തീറ്റതേടാൻ വേണ്ടി മാറ്റിവെക്കണം.
