1) Medical and Dental benefits as a NSF. Long story short, all medical treatments at in-camp medical centres, polyclinics and restructured hospitals are covered by MINDEF. However, if you are hospitalised, only 80% of your ward and meal fees are covered. Dental treatment is also free at SAF Dental clinics. You can also claim 85% of dental expenses at private dental clinics, capped at $120 per year. Thankfully, wisdom tooth extraction is considered a medical treatment and is therefore fully subsidised! This can potentially save you thousands of dollars.

2) Transport claim. You can make transport claims on nsporal if you bookout after 9pm and travel from one camp to another camp. Take note to use JustGrab only. I’ve saved a lot of money from this tip alone. So use it.

3) SAFRA Debit Card. Okay this is a good one. Let’s face it, as a 20 year-old male, you have a lot of things that you want to buy. Or it could just be having a nice meal with you friends outside. You will benefit from this tip. If you are a SAFRA member and have a POSB/DBS account, you can apply for this Debit card which gives you

2% cash rebate* on your local Mastercard contactless transactions;
1% cash rebate* on online transactions; and
0.3% cash rebate* on all other retail transactions

The best part? There is no minimum amount to spend for NSFs! Cash rebates earned will be in the form of SAFRA$, and are capped at a maximum of SAFRA$50 per Card account per calendar month. SAFRA$ can be redeemed using ibanking.

4) ePREP Credits. Surprisingly not many people know this one but MINDEF gives you $350 worth of credits to apply for online courses. Waiting time might be long so apply early.

5) IPPT Gold and Marksman. This is a no-brainer. I don’t care what you need to do. Go out run, get fit and get that 85 points. The $500 is for you to take from MINDEF.

6) Invest. This is absolutely an important skill to learn which will reap benefits ten-folds in the future. I will make a separate video on investing for NSFs. Personally, I use a regular savings plan from FSMone. On the 8th of every month, it will invest $400 automatically into a fund I’ve chosen. This helps me invest without having to analyse the market everyday. Therefore, allowing me to rest and relax after the day’s activities.

7) Learn a skill. You will have free time to yourself during NS with nothing to do. Don’t waste it all getting drunk and playing games. Learn a skill and upgrade yourself.
