RUGBY PARISH #1: PAILTON

Welcome for the first time to Warwickshire, and to the Borough of Rugby. This is the beautiful village of Pailton, where some 516 people reside according to the latest census data

Pailton was originally known as Pailington, and it’s Old English in origin, meaning “Paegals farm”. Here we are approximately 5 miles Northwest of Rugby and about 5 miles Southwest of Lutterworth.

Pailton lies at a crossroads of three roads, one towards Rugby to the South, one towards Lutterworth to the East, and the other towards Nuneaton and Coventry to the West.

About one mile East of Pailton is a radio station operated by the United Kingdom's National Air Traffic Services and is used for measurement and calibration purposes.

One of Pailton’s most well known families are the Lewis’, owners of a coaching business here which expanded to Rugby and Lutterworth. Some of village amenities have been maintained through their money

Going back a little further, Joseph Underhill, who was known as The Pailton Miser, died in 1891. For many years he occupied a pigsty about five foot square and earned a living by acting as a drover.

No one ventured near to his abode or himself with his long matted hair and tattered garments. Thankfully these days, nobody in Pailton looks like that anymore.

It’s a pretty place with some lovely bits to enjoy. So let’s go and see them!
