Four Winds Creative Presents a Paper Plane Craft Cocktail: License to Ill. The original formula to Chartreuse is said to have originated from a 16th century alchemist who gifted it to Carthusian monks (from the Chartreuse monastery) and believed it to be a recipe to an “Elixir of Long Life”. It wasn’t until 1764 did the monks decide to make a milder version, Green Chartreuse (55% ABV). And in 1838 they decided to develop a sweeter version, Yellow Chartreuse (40% ABV). Yellow Chartreuse is comprised of 130 different plants, herbs and flowers and its exact recipe is still closely guarded secret until today. The spirit actually precedes the use of Chartreuse as a color, which people began using in 1884 as a way to describe a color between green and yellow.
