Colosseum | An elliptical amphitheatre just east of the Roman Forum in the centre of the city of Rome, Italy. It is the largest ancient amphitheatre ever built, and despite its age it is still the largest standing amphitheatre in the world. Construction began in 72 under the emperor Vespasian (reigned 69-79 AD) and was completed in 80 AD under his successor and heir, Titus (reigned 79-81). Further modifications were made during the reign of Domitian (reigned 81-96). The three emperors who patronised this work are known as the Flavian dynasty, and later classicists and archaeologists named this amphitheatre the Flavian Amphitheatre because of its association with their family name (Flavius).
