Wendi Adelson, who has been named by the State of Florida as a co-conspirator in the murder for hire of her ex-husband, FSU law professor Dan Markel, wrote a short essay that appeared in the University of Missouri- Kansas City law review article in 2007 about her passion for social change and helping oppressed children and immigrants. In 2011, she also published a semi-autobiographical novel called "This is Our Story," about a young lawyer who helps immigrants who are the victims of human trafficking. That novel was panned by an online lawyer-blogger, who described the book as "Wendi Adelson's Criminally Lousy Novel." It was revealed later, as part of her ex-husband Dan Markel's murder case, that Wendi Adelson's brother Charlie would go on sex tours in South America looking for "young girls" and sought out young prostitutes in Asia as well. According to an ex-boyfriend, Wendi Adelson knew about her brother's proclivities while championing the rights of the victims of human trafficking.
FSU law professor Dan Markel was shot in his garage by a hitman, Sigfredo Garcia (whose family was from Cuba), on 7/18/2014. Three days later, his ex-wife Wendi Adelson took their 2 young children and moved away, driving from Tallahassee with her parents to South Florida. The Adelsons allegedly never spoke to law enforcement again, nor did they contact authorities to inquire as to the status of Dan Markel's murder investigation. The previous year, Wendi Adelson had tried to relocate with the children, but Judge Hobbs denied her motion with prejudice. The hitmen (Garcia and Luis Rivera, whose family is from Puerto Rico) were arrested in 2016, as was an ex-girlfriend of Wendi's brother Charlie, Katie Magbanua (an immigrant from the Philippines). When Magbanua's lawyers, Tara Kawass and Christopher DeCoste, deposed Wendi Adelson in 2019, Adelson would not answer the majority of the questions and repeatedly asserts her Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination, constantly saying, "I assert." She was compelled to testify at the trials with a grant of use and derivative use immunity from the State. At Magbanua's second trial, when Kawass mentioned, "In the event of your arrest," Wendi Adelson boldly declared, "The State isn't going to decide to arrest me," with a smile.
Sigfredo Garcia and Katherine "Katie" Magbanua were convicted and sentenced to life in prison. Their two children had to be raised by relatives. Luis Rivera became a witness for the State and will serve 19 years total in prison for his role in Markel's murder. In November 2023, Wendi Adelson's brother Charlie Adelson was convicted of murder, conspiracy, and solicitation to commit murder. Wendi Adelson continued to assert that her family was not involved in Markel's murder. One week later, their mother Donna Adelson was arrested, as she tried to board a plane out of the country at the Miami airport, and charged with the same crimes. Donna Adelson's trial will begin on 8/19/2025 in Leon County, Florida.
