Sheriff Ed Troyer testifies in his trial; Troyer criminal trial

With the prosecution resting its case against Pierce County Sheriff Ed Troyer, the defense continued presenting witnesses Thursday morning.

Troyer took the stand in his own defense Thursday afternoon and discussed what happened during a confrontation with a black newspaper carrier Sedric Altheimer on the night of Jan. 27, 2021.

Troyer shared a very different version of what than what the prosecution and Altheimer said happened that morning.

“When you’re going take somebody out, I don’t think he meant to dinner,” said Troyer about the alleged Altheimer threat. “I think he wanted to take me out, like take me out or fight or get me or kill me or something.”

“He put his hands on the car and he’s just swinging at me like very animated,” added Troyer.

While Troyer maintained that the newspaper delivery driver threatened him after the sheriff thought he was a prowler and followed him in his Tacoma neighborhood, Troyer downplayed the confrontation and reaction, saying he only asked for one or two units to respond.

More than 40 units were dispatched.
