Tom Moorehead was born in Monroe, Louisiana and he earned his B.A. degree in business administration from Grambling State University. He would later accept a job at the University of Michigan as director of community services, and at the same time was pursuing his Ph.D. in urban and regional planning, when his fraternity brother James Bradley of Bradley Automotive Group introduced him to the car dealership business and took him under his wing teaching him every aspect of the business.

Tom was later accepted into the first in-house Dealer Training Program at General Motors, and subsequently opened his first dealership, Moorehead Sentry Buick/Isuzu in 1987 in Omaha, Nebraska. He would sell his original dealership in 1995 upon opening Moorehead Buick/GMC Trucks in Decatur, Illinois. In 1998, Moorehead was awarded one of the first African Americans to be awarded a new BMW dealership in Sterling, Virginia. He sold his dealership in Decatur in 2000 with the opening of Moorehead BMW/Mini of Sterling.

A chance conversation with a neighbor would lead to Tom in 2007, becoming the first African American owner of a Marriott Residence Inn at the National Harbor Resort and Convention Center in Maryland. Then in 2013, Tom would become the first African American awarded a full-service Rolls Royce franchise with the opening of Rolls Royce Motorcars of Sterling. He later purchased Harley-Davidson of Washington D.C. in Fort Washington, Maryland in 2014, and in 2016 became the first African American Lamborghini and McLaren dealer. The company eventually sold the Harley-Davidson dealership, and Tom resigned from his role as CEO in 2019, but retains his role as chairman of the board.
