Описание к видео Final arguments in trial of migrant boat captain

(4 Oct 2016) The final defence arguments were heard at a courthouse in Catania, Italy on Tuesday in the trial of two men involved in a shipwreck of a boat carrying migrants and refugees where up to 600 people lost their lives.
On the night of the 18 April 2015 a boat carrying mostly African migrants and refugees capsized off the coast of Sicily as a civilian freighter ship, the King Jacob, approached.
The incident has come to be known for one of the largest single losses of life during the Mediterranean migrant crisis, killing between 500 and 600 people, many of whom were trapped in the hold.
Defendants Mohammed Ali Malek, who is alleged to have captained the boat, and Mahmud Bikhit, who the prosecution said was working with Malek, arrived at the Catania courthouse on Tuesday accompanied by their lawyers to present their final arguments.
According to their lawyers Catania prosecutors have asked for 18 years jail term for Malek and six years jail term for Bikhit.
The two are accused of manslaughter over the disaster, which happened after their heavily-overloaded boat sank on its way from Libya, a charge that they deny.
Their lawyers said that the verdict was now expected in December.
Only 28 people were rescued alive from the shipwreck.
