Coming back from a trip to Big Bear I took the scenic route through Big Pines, on the north slope of the San Gabriel Mountains, and came upon the aftermath of the Bobcat Fire.

The Bobcat fire started on September 6th 2020 in an area close to the Cogswell Dam above Asuza, deep into the San Gabriel Mountains. Although the origin of the fire is still under investigation, it is suspected that it began when winds blew tree branches against the power lines by the dam. By the day this video was recorded, October 12th, the Bobcat Fire had already burned almost 120,000 acres, or about 485 square kilometers, and continued to flare in some spots. The burned area is 140 times the size of the Central Park in New York or 340 times the Hyde Park in London. As such, the Bobcat Fire has become one of the largest in the history of Los Angeles County.

As October 17th the Bobcat was 92% contained - but it had already destroyed 87 homes and damaged 30 more. The figures for other structures, like businesses and farm buildings, are similar. The first got extremely close to the famous Mount Wilson Observatory, having been stopped by firefighters just 100 meters from the facility main building. Although the Bobcat Fire caused no fatalities, six people were injured by it, and countless animals in delicate ecosystems of Southern California lost their lives.
