We’ve been saying that deadlifts are damaging to the spine for a while. It’s becoming self evident that barbell deadlifts need to be eradicated from the industry. Time and time again we see people come into FP to rehab themselves after destroying their discs with this exercise.

Making the deadlift a centerpiece of your training is one of the stupidest things you can do. People are already dealing with too much spinal compression, so you should probably think twice before you go ahead and flatten your discs even more than they already are.

The only thing a deadlift makes you better at is deadlifting. As an exercise it has little to no transferability to how humans move around in real life. Human movement happens in multiple dimensions. It involves the frontal, saggital, transverse and longitudinal planes of motion. Whereas the deadlift keeps you stuck in the saggital plane.

If there was one thing you should aim to excel at it should never be the deadlift. Performance and longevity in the body come through being able to sprint impeccably without pain. If you can sprint well, your muscles will be well primed to perform other functions like lifting.

Fortunately people are becoming more intelligent as it relates to what they’re prioritizing in their exercise selection. For many years we’ve been fighting battles on the damaging effects of barbell deadlifts. And now it’s time we win the war.
