About Kalighat Temple:
Kalighat Temple is a sacred place. Since it is the 52 Shakti Peetha of India, where according to the legends the toes of the right foot of Sati fell. It is believed that Goddess Sati, failed to bear the insult of her husband God Shiva and immolated herself on the Homa. Shiva was so much upset that he started dancing with the body of Sati frantically and performed the dance of destruction across the universe. Other gods tried to dissuade Shiva and Vishnu with his disk cut through Satis corpse. One part of Satis body fell at Kalighat, kolkata and became Shakti Peetha. It is a pilgrimage site and a major tourist attraction. Originally, the temple was a small hut built by King Manasingha in the early Sixteenth century. The present structure of the temple was built the Sabarna Roy Chowdhury family of Barisha. The construction of the temple was accomplished in 1809. The existing idol of touchstone was crafted by two saints - Atmaram Giri and Brahmananda Giri. The deity features three huge eyes, four gold hands and most importantly a long gold tongue. The devotees visit the Garbha Griha, the interior of temple, where Goddess Kali was installed. The premise of the Kalighat temple complex is consisting of small temples like Sosthi Tala (which was built by Gobinda Das Mondal in the year 1880. The site of the altar is the Samadhi of Brahmananda Giri), The Hari-Kath tala and the Radha-Krishna temple, which was built in the year 1843 Kundupukur is the holy tank, outside the boundary walls. Presently, the area of the tank is around 10 cottahs. Beforehand, it was called Kaku-Kunda.
