Earlier all the weapons, oil & machinery that India imported from Russia is mostly transported from Russian port of Saint Petersburg through Red sea to the Indian port of Mumbai. This sea route takes 40 days to transport. To overcome this, Russia and India has connected the Russian port on Vladivostok with Chennai port passing through Strait of Malacca. This can cut down transit time from 40 days to 24 days saving fuel & time of 16 days.
