Debian 1.1 Buzz was the first officially released version of Debian, made available on June 17, 1996. Its name was inspired by the character Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story, following the Debian community's tradition of naming versions after Pixar movie characters. This version was an evolution of the unofficial Debian 0.93R6 and marked the beginning of what would become one of the most important and influential Linux distributions in history.

Among its notable features, Debian 1.1 introduced a package management system based on dpkg, allowing greater control over software installations and updates. It included approximately 474 packages and ran on the Linux 2.0 kernel, which was a major innovation at the time, offering better network support and greater stability. Although modest compared to later versions, Buzz was the starting point for the philosophy of stability and freedom that Debian continues to uphold today.
