Hanyusuchus: The Giant Extinct Crocodilian From Ancient China

Описание к видео Hanyusuchus: The Giant Extinct Crocodilian From Ancient China

Hanyusuchus is an extinct crocodilian that inhabited ancient China. While only recently recognized as a distant species, its existence was mentioned in a number of Chinese records, the last of which was written just a few centuries ago. Hanyusuchus belongs to the crocodilian subclade Gavialidae, famous for their long, slender snouts. Gavialids, particularly the specialized gharial, and to a lesser extent the broader snouted Tomistoma, prefer to hunt fish. However, Hanyusuchus grew larger than either of its living relatives, and ancient Chinese records portray it as not just a threat to humans, but even to tigers.
