Why Does Dragon's End Feel So Difficult, And How Could It Be Improved?

It would be an understatement to say that the meta-event of Dragon's End has been a little controversial among the Guild Wars 2 community. While I wouldn't necessarily say that it's TRULY difficult, it's definitely a step up from anything else we've seen from the open world - but why does such a little step seem to be causing major issues among the wider playerbase?
