Sitemap.xml is a simple xml file which contains all website URLs arranged in a specified format which needs to be crawled by the search engines.

Search engine crawls each & every page mentioned in this file & displays it in search results. So, it is important to create sitemap.xml for your site.

There are 2 methods of creating sitemap. Automated & Manual. If you want to follow automated method, there are many online tools & sites through which you can generate sitemap for your site. If you want to manually create the sitemap, create one simple xml file & name it as sitemap.xml. It will contain below tags:
xml, urlset, url, location, lastmod, changfreq, priority.

There is no restriction on saving location. You can save it either in the root directory of the site or inside any sub-directory. Or you can have multiple sitemaps for one site stored in different locations.

You can not have more than 50,000 URLs or your sitemap size cannot be more than 50 MiB. If it exceeds you can create multiple sitemaps & list it under sitemap index file. Sitemap index file will contain below tags:
xml, sitemapindex, sitemap, loc, lastmod.

Sitemap index has also the limit of upto 50,000 entries & it can not be more than 50 MiB. However, you can have multiple sitemap index files for your site.

You can submit your sitemap either directly to search engines using their submission URLs or you can include sitemap entry in robots.txt. For e.g. Sitemap: http://example.com/sitemap.xml.
