The war resulted in larger destroyers. The American destroyers of the Allen M. Sumner class displaced 2,200 tonnes, while the largest vessels in the Arleigh Burke class can displace up to 9,600 tonnes. Furthermore, destroyers were able to perform the surface-combatant responsibilities once held by battleships and cruisers thanks to the development of guided missiles.
