Torvill & Dean "Slaughter on 10th Avenue", Queen's Gala, 1983

This rare mythical 10 minute routine was only ever performed once - confirmation from Christopher Dean that it was indeed "A one time only event", Thank you! - at a special televised St.Ivel International Gala at Queen's Ice Rink in London, and broadcast on BBC1, Sunday, 6th November, 1983, if any fans remember watching! The Gala was introduced by former Skating Champion and Entertainer Anita Harris, and other skaters included Karen Barber & Nicky Slater, Birgit Lorenz & Knut Schubert, Tiffany Chin, Heiko Fisher and others.
'Slaughter on Tenth Avenue' was composed by Richard Rodgers in 1936, as part of the show "On Your Toes" - it was a Ballet within the Musical.
This Exhibition performance was created during Torvill & Dean's musical theatre phase of work in their Amateur career, and in my opinion it is fantastic! I love the choreography and style of the routine, the length of the piece, it's a complete performance of storytelling and Dance Theatre on Ice, and the costumes are fabulous!
I really do marvel at how Chris & Jayne managed to perfect this piece and remember 10 minutes worth of steps and choreography in their busy Olympic season aswell! That's how incredibly talented they are! :-)
It's already gone straight into my Top Ten of Chris & Jayne Classics in their astounding repertoire of work, and even though we discussed this elusive routine many times on the old Torvill & Dean Yahoo Fan Group, and pined to see it, when we eventually did, it lived up to all our expectations. I see something new every time I watch.
My fellow longtime T&D Fan Vera said: "I am so excited to finally see the routine, so many moves in there they had not done before or after this, such a pity it was never performed again considering how much time they spent on it. As always so well put together and so original."
If you saw this performance live and attended the Gala, please get in touch. :-)
Many Thanks to the person who recorded it in another country where the Gala was shown, and kindly sent it to me, I am very grateful. I am sharing it publicly especially for Chris's 61st Birthday today. It was performed 36 years ago! :-)
