100 Years Later The Unknown Soldier’s Journey Home Aboard USS Olympia on Monday, October 25, 2021 at the Independence Seaport Museum 211 S. Columbus Blvd. Philadelphia, PA 19106.

Commemoration ceremony on the 100th Anniversary of the departure of the World War I Unknown Soldier from Le Havre, France to the United States in 1921 and the USS Olympia’s mission to bring the Unknown Soldier home.

The tomb at Arlington also represents “every mother whose son has not come back and is unknown,” said Pam Stemple, second vice president of American Gold Star Mothers. Stemple’s son, Army Ranger Sgt. 1st Class Tomas Avey, died in Afghanistan in 2015. She reflected on what mothers who never got their children back endured. “We want to honor that, and that’s why it’s so important for us to go and see this,” Stemple said.
