The New Ethiopian Labour Law Progress, Gaps and Way Forward

Ethiopian Labour Rights Watch (ELRW) in collaboration with the Civil Society Research Center (CSRC) organized a webinar on the Ethiopian Labour Law to deliberate on the progress made, the gaps that still remain and the way forward. Many stakeholders including labour unions have expressed their satisfaction with some of the new provisions of the current Ethiopian Labour Law, while others insist that not all of their concerns are incorporated. Some of the new provisions such as minimum wage require additional administrative measures such as the establishment of an agency. Therefore, further follow up is required in going forward.
The webinar also discusses the major challenges posed by new labour law in the industrial development and workers of the country, thereby deducing a common consensus which will then be shared with Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (MoLSA) for their consideration and necessary amendments/ clarifications for the betterment of the industry and the labour force.
