The View from the Center of the Universe, The New Universe & the Human Future - A Conversation with Joel Primack, Nancy Abrams and Deepak Chopra

Joel Primack is a distinguished professor of physics emeritus at the University of California Santa Cruz.  He initiated and helped develop the cold dark matter theory, which has now become the standard theory of the origin and evolution of galaxies and large scale structure in the universe. He and his team use supercomputers to simulate the evolution of galaxies and the universe, and they compare the results with observational data. Primack is a fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). In 2020 he received the APS Lilienfeld Prize "for seminal contributions to our understanding of the formation of structure in the Universe, and for communicating to the public the extraordinary progress in our understanding of cosmology.”  He initiated the AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellowship program, in which more than 4000 PhD scientists have now participated, and the AAAS Science and Human Rights program. He was recently president of Sigma Xi, the scientific research honor society, which publishes American Scientist magazine.

Joel Primack co-authored with Frank von Hippel Advice and Dissent: Scientists in the Political Arena (1974), and with Nancy Ellen Abrams The View from the Center of the Universe: Discovering our Extraordinary Place in the Cosmos (2006) and The New Universe and the Human Future: How a Shared Cosmology Could Transform the World (2011), based on their 2009 Terry Lectures at Yale University. Joel and Nancy shared a 2012 Sprit of Rustum Roy Award from Deepak Chopra’s foundation.

Nancy Ellen Abrams is a philosopher of science, lawyer, and lecturer at the
University of California Santa Cruz. Her book A God That Could Be Real: Spirituality, Science, and the Future of Our Planet proposes a science-based, empowering, and future-oriented way of rethinking the idea of God in light of undeniable and growing knowledge about the universe, the human brain, and the perilous state of our world. It won the 2015 USA Best Book Award in philosophy. Earlier she co-authored with her husband, cosmologist Joel R. Primack, The View from the Center of the Universe:
Discovering Our Extraordinary Place in the Cosmos, which was the first book to interpret the place of human beings in the new dark matter/dark energy picture of the universe.

After presenting the prestigious Terry Lectures at Yale University, Nancy and Joel co-authored The New Universe and the Human Future: How a Shared Cosmology Could Transform the World, which won the Nautilus Prize. Their two co- authored books won the Chopra Foundation's "Spirit of Rustum Roy Award" for “contributions to consciousness and to creating a peaceful, just, sustainable, and healthy world.” At the University of California, Santa Cruz, Abrams and Primack’s course "Cosmology and Culture” won awards from both the Templeton Foundation and the American Council of Learned Societies. As an attorney Abrams specialized in science policy controversies, consulted for the government of Sweden, worked in Rome for a trans-European environmental law institute, and for the Ford Foundation and the Office of Technology Assessment of the U.S. Congress. She has also been a singer/songwriter throughout her career and has performed her brand of “philosophical cabaret” in 19 countries.
