Описание к видео 48-Hour Turkish Street Food Binge in Izmir 🇹🇷

I started off my foodie adventure in Izmir with Kumru, a popular type of sandwich that you can find all over Izmir.

"Kumru" means "Dove" in Turkish, and its shape resembles that bird.

I found it to be a bit dry on my first bite, because as with any Turkish food they don't use any sauce, instead focusing on just using high quality ingredients.

However, when I finally bit into the thick juicy slices of perfectly ripe tomato, I started to enjoy my Kumru fully.

After stroll down Izmir's waterfront promenade, breathing in the fresh sea air, I visited a cafe that's famous for their Boyoz. It's a type of pastry that you can have with all sorts of fillings, and I chose mincemeat. I thought it tasted like a Cornish Pasty back in the UK.

Straight after demolishing the Kumru and Boyoz, I was sitting down to a plate of Midye Dolma, which means stuffed mussels. The mussels are cooked, then stuffed with seasoned rice, and them served cold with a lemon.

I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would, but I think it would be better as a hot meal rather than cold.

With a belly full of tasty Turkish street food, I went on a hike to Kadifekale to burn off some energy.

Kadifekale is a historical fortress built by the successors of Alexander the Great in 3BC. It has served various civilizations after the ancient Greeks.

It was a steep uphill trek to get there, but the view of Izmir from the castle was well worth it.

Back down in the main city, I enjoyed Kumpir for my evening meal. Kumpir is what we would call a 'loaded' baked potato in the UK. A massive spud stuffed and overflowing with your choice of any from a couple of dozen ingredients. It was quite the carb heavy meal that I needed after all the trekking around I'd done so far.

I really deserved that stuffed baked potato, and a tasty dessert too, as I visited a popular shop to try the Izmir Bombasi, a warm cookie stuffed with 'lava' melted chocolate.

The next day I was ready to continue the foodie adventure but not before I bought myself a local football team top and had a good explore around the Agora of Smyrna.

The agora was an ancient marketplace, originally built by the Greeks in the 4th century BC, and just like the castle, was later used by the civilizations that followed.

Back in Kemeraltı Çarşısı, which is an old market that's still being used as such these days, I looked for something tasty to continue the foodie adventure.

I stumbled across a restaurant selling İskender kebab, which I was going to wait until I was back in Istanbul to try, but I couldn't resist.

Iskender kebab is made from thinly sliced doner meat served over pieces of pita bread, topped with a rich tomato sauce and melted butter. It was super fatty and super delicious. I can't wait to try it at one of the famous restaurants in İstanbul.

In the same bazaar I found a small cafe with some tasty desserts on display. I ordered something that looked like a rice pudding with some sweet toppings, but it tasted totally different to what I was expecting.

I did some Google research while eating it and discovered that the dessert was called Asure, and is also known as a Noah's Pudding. It's a traditional Turkish dessert made from a mix of grains, fruits, and nuts, symbolizing peace and sharing. It is often prepared during the Islamic month of Muharram and is said to have been created by Noah's family after the ark came to rest on Mount Ararat.

I was expecting to film this vlog over 2 days, but was back at the old Izmir market again on day 3 as I wanted to try the local meatball dish 'Izmir Kofte' before I left. I also had one last bit of sightseeing to do, which was to visit the Asansor.

The Asansör is a historic elevator built in 1907 to connect the lower and upper parts of the Karataş neighborhood. It's become a popular tourist attraction and a symbol of İzmir, so I couldn't miss it.
