COOKING DAAL CHAWAL WITH MY INDIAN MOTHER IN LAW - Dhaba Style Dal Recipe

Hey Family,

It has been a long time since we have uploaded or even done a cooking vlog with Mummy Ji and you guys have been requesting this so much, so we just had to come back into the kitchen together today and make a nice simple dish - daal chawal! Recipe listed below.

RECIPE:

Ingredients:
Bowl of black lentils
1x white onion
4x green chillis (or however many you'd like depending on your taste/spiciness)
1x tomato
Fistful of ginger
1x full clove of garlic
Tumeric
Garam Masala
Salt
Pepper
Red Chilli Powder
Oil (any to your preference)
2x bay leaves
Cumin seeds
coriander (optional for finishing touches)
Rice (or whatever you would like to serve the dish with)

Directions:

Firstly, get the lentils and wash in some water until the water runs clear, and then put it into the pressure cooker and fill half way with water. Then add into this 2 teaspoons of salt, 1 teaspoon of tumeric, and half a teaspoon of red chilli powder, and a small teaspoon of oil and mix together. Once this is done put on a high heat and let the pressure cooker do 6-8 whistles before removing from heat and letting cooker fully cool down on its own.

Next to start on the tarka finely chop garlic and set aside. Then, finely chop onion and ginger together and set aside also. Heat up oil in a frying pan (enough to cover the base) and add in a large pinch of cumin seeds, bay leaf's, and dried red chillis and whilst this heats up finely chop tomato and chillis together (you are ready to add in the garlic once the oil is hot and the cumin seeds are bubbling and turning brown). Then, add in garlic and fry for a few minutes until fragrant, next add in the onion and ginger until brown and soft. Once this is done, add in the tomatoes and chillis and stir. Next add in half a teaspoon of tumeric, 1 and a half teaspoon of garam masala, half a teaspoon of black pepper, and around 1 teaspoon of salt again (this will be a little less salt but at the end if needed or want extra salt you can add this in according to your taste). Stir this until spices absorbed and it turns to a darker colour and set aside.

Next, open up the pressure cooker and check to make sure lentils are soft and the water level isn't too low (check video to see how the ratio should be), and add more water if needed as we had to. Next, add in the tarka to this that you have previously fried and stir well. If added more water to the cooker just simmer on medium heat for around 5 minutes to absorb all the spices. Have a taste from here to check if it needs anything else according to your liking (e.g. more salt, more spices etc), and you are finished!

Next, finely chop up a bunch of coriander (this stage is optional for some extra flavour) and add into this mixture and stir well. Serve with whatever you enjoy (we used rice, but you can serve with salad, roti, paratha, naan, etc) and enjoy!

We hope you guys enjoyed this video with mummy ji, it has been so so long since we cooked together so this was actually a lot of fun.
