I love street food and I see it as the gateway to understanding a country’s cultural and culinary identity. Also as a backpacker, there’s also no better way to get well fed on the cheap than dining on street food! However, whenever I arrive in a new country I have a problem – I don’t know where to find the best and safest street food (food poisoning sucks!). No amount of my research will measure up to a true local’s knowledge and experience, which is why I have teamed up with Vanarith from Phnom Penh Street Food Tour to find the best street food Cambodia has to offer here in this 3 part series.

In Part 3, Vanarith takes us to a Cambodian culinary staple – the beer garden. Truly a centre of the local community, beer gardens come alive after dark where friends gather to eat, chat, laugh and of course, drink Angkor beer. Be ready to be welcomed by pretty hostesses into a loud and exciting atmosphere, the perfect place to rewind after a day’s hard work! To end the night we finish off with some local Cambodian desserts, which all generally seems to follow the simple recipe of fruit + sugar + coconut milk + ice. Simple, but very effective and the perfect solution for the hot and humid Cambodian nights!
