It's finally my turn to remix this banger and I decided to go all out!

This is my first attempt at Phonk (at least drift phonk)! I did a lot of experimenting to find out how to make it fit my style and I think I found a way to implement it well in this song! At first, I was gonna try to make the 1st chorus all Phonk but it felt really empty compared to the pre chorus. What I did instead was make the chorus start with Phonk to build into the signature "IDOL" part then carry on the rest of the chorus with my usual future bass/speed house style! I made sure to revisit the Chorus Phonk concept though in the 2nd chorus and I think it fit better there!

Before I started making the track, I knew I wanted to make the slow down section a genre switch to house because when I listened to the original track, that's all I could think of when the track slowed down. With the track slowing down to 150, I thought it was a perfect opportunity to make it House there cause the tempo got closer to what you'd hear if you'd listen to that genre. Granted, it's still 20 bpm faster than what you'd expect but hey, at least it isn't 166 haha. But yes, I am insanely proud of the sound design in the slow down section!! Especially the instrumental section after the vocal part! The idea of the drop concept flowed through me naturally so I made that section really fast as I knew exactly what I wanted to do! Man, it feels good to be inspired again!!!!

Another thing I wanted to note about this one is the mixing! I'm starting to get the hang of making the vocals in my song fit a lot better. The comments on my previous songs in 2020(ish) talking about how the vocals were too low always bothered me. Back in the day, I gave myself the excuse of "well, they aren't as loud because I want the focus to be on the instrumental". That was so dumb of me because in reality, I was refusing to improve on something most people look for in music; understanding what the vocalist is singing! What really helped me make this mix as clean as it is is understanding the amount of Low Midrange is needed in the song as a whole. This section of EQ is SO important and can bring a song to life or kill it if there's too much in that frequency range. When you've gotten a nice level of compression and all that jazz on your vocals, you got to dial in the low mids to be slightly louder than the rest of your track so it sits in the mix perfectly. The challenge here is producing the backing track to keep a consistent level in that frequency range the entire time when vocals are present. Too much low mids on the vocals themselves and they can start to sound detached from the mix, almost like they are "laying on top of it" instead of "being in it". Obviously, you gotta make sure the other frequencies in your vocals are a good level too but the secret is in the low mids!!

Huge huge huge shout out to the new vocalist feature on this song, Miori Celesta!!! I discovered her work through her cover of Aishite (I'm sure many of you have as well haha). After looking through her covers, I sent her DM asking her about IDOL and she was already planning on covering it so it all worked out! For real though, I really wanna work with her on another song where she can fit in those sick growls like she did in her Aishite cover! She is insanely talented so please check out her work if you haven't already!!
