Retro Fighters Defender: The Six in One PlayStation Controller - First Impressions (See Description)

It's finally here! Join me as I take a look at Retro Fighter's newest controller: The Defender! An All-In-One wireless PlayStation Controller that works for PS1, PS2, PS3, and even PS Classic, Switch, and PC! I'll go over my experiences with PS1, PS2, and PS3, along with my general thoughts on the design and feel!

Gameplay recorded from original consoles using HD Retrovision or Retro Gaming Cables shielded cables (Component for PS2 and PS3, SCART for PS1) - Running through a RetroTINK 5X Pro.

Update: The issues with control I experienced could be the result of input lag. I believe at the time I filmed this, I may have been playing on capture preview on OBS for the PS1 and PS2 segments. The PS3 footage I am pretty sure I wasn't, but I cannot be 100% certain, so the fault could totally be on me. Some times the input lag is imperceptible on capture preview (at least to me), other times it produces a noticeable effect. Something similar happened when I was taking a look at the Blade and Battler Retro Fighter controllers.

Update 2: A year later, where are we at? Well, the Blue Defender I got in this video has started to register activity on the right analogue stick when it isn’t being touched, causing unwanted actions in games, most recently causing Gex to rapidly flick his tongue for a fly that isn’t there. I got a Black Defender not long after this video, which hasn’t had any problems.

Update 3: Those problems with the Blue defender got way worse, and it is pretty much unusable due to phantom right stick input. The Black Defender I got not long after this video went live is still working fine. I have started using an 8bit-do Pro 2 with the 8bit-do PS receiver for PS1 and PS2, its a similar solution that adds multi-console compatibility, with the added bonus of button mapping.

Update 4: The Black Defender I got a few months after the Blue one has also started to exhibit issues. It has a battery issue, going totally dead if not used within a few days. Hard to really recommend this controller as now both the ones I got within the launch window have had varying problems. I still enjoy the Brawler controllers for the N64, and continue to use the Brawler Elite when getting N64 Capture, but the Defender has been a miss in my books. Really hype idea, but both of the controllers I got have big issues; one is totally defective and can’t really be used due to phantom inputs, and the other works, but only if I make sure to leave it charging at all times when not in use. If I forget to plug it in when done, it’s not going to work the next time I use it due to its battery draining rapidly.
