AliyarDam ” The Best Picnic Spot” is located in the foot hills of Valparai. It is about 65 kilometers from Coimbatore in Valparai Mainroad. From Pollachi is about 25kms. and From Valparai is about 40 Kms. is located above 918 feet (280 m) from the Mean sea level on the Anamalai mountain range and in the Anamalai Tiger Reserve.
AliyarDam is a huge tourist magnet thanks to its pretty parks, its aquarium and the mini theme park. If you are looking for a picnic spot, well, this is where you should head to! For those who want to stay overnight, go to Valparai.
 
AliyarDam’s scenic environs are what makes it so popular. Surrounded by mountains capped with mist and verdant slopes with the glistening silent reservoir, it makes for an ideal place to forget the hurry burly of city life.
 
Aliyar Dam with its panoramic surroundings is an idyllic spot for a picnic with its lofty mountains and the tranquil reservoir. Aliyar Park, which is just below the Aliyar Dam, is a well-maintained spot. Do check out the aquarium next to the park. You could also enjoy some boating if you like. Want to enjoy the thrilling gush of a waterfall? Well, Monkey Falls is just 2 kms away from Aliyar Dam via the Valparai route. Aquarium, play area, Boat House  and The Temple of Consciousness are the tourist attractions.
Parambikulam Aliyar Project – PAP
Aliyar Dam, which is 81 meters high, was built between 1959 and 1969 across the Aliyar River primarily for irrigation purposes. Currently, water is released through three sets of sluices or canals – Pollachi Canal, Vettaikaranpudur Canal and the river sluices. In 2002, a project was commissioned to generate hydroelectric power. This project consists of a series of dams interconnected by tunnels and canals for utilizing the waters of the Upper Nirar Dam, Lower Nirar Dam, Sholayar Dam, Parambikulam Dam, Thunakadavu Dam, Peruvaripallam Dam and Aliyar rivers, which flow at a range of elevations, for irrigation and power generation. The project is a terrific illustration of engineering skills.
Aliyar Lake receives water from the Upper Aliyar Reservoir through the hydroelectric power station in Navamalai, Upper Aliyar and the Parambikulam reservoir through a contour canal.
Who built Sholayar dam valparai?
Sholayar is situated 20 km from Valparai, a hill station in the Anaimalai Hills of the Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu India. A part of the hydroelectric project of Tamil Nadu, special permission is required to visit the dam. Sholayar Dam is built by Sholayar Flanking in 1964 and Sholayar Saddle Dam in 1965.
