Dustin Poirier will face Max Holloway on 19 July in a trilogy bout which will also be the final fight of his UFC career. The American intends to retire after this fight and will headline UFC 318 in his home city, New Orleans. Poirier, 36, has two wins over Holloway, the first at featherweight in 2012 and more recently at lightweight in 2019. The rivals will contest a lightweight bout and it will also be for the ceremonial BMF title. The UFC awards the belt to the "baddest" fighter in the promotion and it has been won in the past by Jorge Masvidal, Justin Gaethje and Holloway.
Holloway, 33, won the belt at UFC 300 in 2024 with a last-minute knockout that has gone down as an all-time classic stoppage. Poirier has never won a full UFC title, but did have a spell as interim lightweight champion and is one of the most popular fighters among fans. With 23 stoppages from his 30 wins, Poirier is one of the most exciting finishers of recent years. In total, Poirier has 30 wins, nine losses and one no-contest, having fought all his direct rivals including Michael Chandler, Charles Oliveira, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Eddie Alvarez, Conor McGregor and Justin Gaethje.
UFC 318, set for July 19 at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, is shaping up to be one of the most exciting events of 2025. Headlining the card is the highly anticipated trilogy between Dustin Poirier and Max Holloway for the BMF title — Poirier’s emotional farewell fight in front of his hometown fans. Alongside the main event, fans will witness top-tier matchups including rising bantamweight Vinicius Oliveira vs Kyler Phillips and an explosive light heavyweight bout between Jimmy Crute and Marcin Prachnio. As the UFC continues to finalize the fight card, excitement is building for an unforgettable night of MMA action.
A lot of fight fans were happy to see the trilogy fight between Dustin Poirier and Max Holloway come together for several reasons. Not only are they two of the most exciting fighters on the roster, it’s a perfect way for ‘The Diamond’ to ride off into the sunset after competing against a fellow legend in front of his home crowd. However, the UFC had already taken precautions just in case anything happened to either of the two men involved in the UFC 318 main event by attempting to put plans in place for a backup fighter. Dan Hooker was set to face Justin Gaethje at UFC 313 in March until a hand injury forced ‘The Hangman’ out of the five-round co-main event. The 35-year-old stated after the injury that he was hoping to return in the summer with UFC 317 on International Fight Week being a potential destination. During a recent appearance on Sky Sports New Zealand, Hooker revealed that the promotion had contacted him about getting booked for July 19 so that he could be the backup fighter.
Charles Oliveira rates UFC 318 headliner Dustin Poirier's striking very highly.
Oliveira (35-10 MMA, 23-10 UFC) has fought the lightweight division's elite, from the likes of Islam Makhachev, to Arman Tsarukyan, to Dustin Poirier, and Justin Gaethje. "Do Bronx" was dropped by Poirier in their lightweight title fight at UFC 269, but rallied to submit him in Round 3. Poirier will step into the octagon for a final time when he challenges BMF champion Max Holloway in the UFC 318 main event on July 19 from his home state of Louisiana. Having fought both Poirier (30-9 MMA, 22-8 UFC) and Holloway (26-8 MMA, 22-8 UFC), Oliveira shared his prediction for the fight. During a recent appearance on Sky Sports New Zealand, Hooker revealed that the promotion had contacted him about getting booked for July 19 so that he could be the backup fighter.
