A “People’s Tribunal on Assam: Evictions, Detentions and the Right to Belong” was held at the Speaker Hall, Constitution Club of India on 26th August. The tribunal brought together jurists, policymakers, and civil rights activists to deliberate on the pressing issues of evictions, detentions, and citizenship in Assam.

Key speakers included Justice Iqbal Ansari (Former Chief Justice, Patna High Court), Justice Anjna Prakash (Former Judge, Patna High Court), and Gopal K. Pillai (Former Home Secretary of India).

The visiting team featured Jawahar Sircar (IAS, Former MP, Rajya Sabha), Wajahat Habibullah (Former Chief Information Commissioner), Syeda Hameed (Former Chairperson, Women’s Commission), Harsh Mander (IAS, Activist), Prashant Bhushan (Advocate, Supreme Court), and Fawaz Shaheen (Researcher, APCR). Taison Hussain (President, ABMSU) and Imtiaz Hussain (Working President, AAMSU) also addressed the gathering.

The session was moderated by Prof. Apoorvanand of Delhi University. The event was organized by the Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR) in collaboration with Karwan-e-Mohabbat, highlighting the human and constitutional concerns surrounding the right to belong in Assam.
