Informality, The Civic and Architecture in Indonesia
This webinar session will feature three Indonesian design practices and their attempts to form spatial agency (Awan, Schneider, and Till 2013) within the complex social dynamics of built environment in Indonesia. Their projects embody critiques on, and resistances to, the landscape of inequality in Indonesian cities, the loss of social space and marginalization of informality, and the rapid demise of local craftmanship and vernacular building culture. Their design works are attempts to spatialize and carve new modes of collectivity, urbanity and locality as pathways towards a more inclusive and civic built environment. Design is exercised as a method of community engagement, empowerment, and cultural dialog. The three practices will also reveal a rich socio-cultural spectrum and environmental challenges as showcased in three distinct Indonesian locations: Jakarta (the national capital), Bandung (the design capital) and hinterland Java.
About our presenters:
Kamil Muhammad is a Jakarta-based architect and director of design/research studio pppooolll and co-founder of Architecture Sans Frontieres-Indonesia. He obtained a Master of Architecture degree at the University of Melbourne in 2014. His practice was awarded the LafargeHolcim Award Asia Pacific (2017), ASF-INT Social Production of Habitat Award (2017), finalist for Future Park Melbourne (2019), and was selected for What If? Lab Eindhoven (2018). Kamil is the co-curator for the upcoming IAW-Exhibition as part of the UIA Congress 2021 in Rio de Janeiro.
LABO. is a Bandung based design and architecture firm led by Nelly Lolita Daniel and Deddy Wahjudi. They both obtained their Bachelor degrees in Architecture at ITB (Institut Teknologi Bandung) in Indonesia and doctorate degree in Design and Culture Methodology at Chiba University in Japan. Wahjudi currently teaches at ITB’s Faculty of Fine Arts and Design. As the name implies, LABO. stands for "Laboratory,” where finding a balanced mix between social, economic and environment aspects, is the main philosophy. Established in April 2006, LABO. have participated and won multiple local and international design competitions and awards, including the 1st Prize for their design of the New Museum of Bandung Asia-Africa Conference (2014), their entry for the 2018 design competition to revitalise the National Monument Square (Monas) in Jakarta, and the “Envisioning the Future of Jakarta” for an International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam 2009. Their hybrid multiple dwelling complex/design office/design community hub, Labo. The Mori, received the 2019 FuturArc Award for residential project category.
Eko Prawoto is an Indonesian installation artist, architect, and academic. Prawoto runs his own design laboratory, Eko Prawoto Architecture Workshop and teaches at the Duta Wacana University in Yogyakarta. He studied with Y.B Mangunwijaya, the late Indonesian architect/catholic priest who was awarded with the Aga Khan Award and obtained a Master of Architecture degree from the Berlage Institute Amsterdam. Prawoto combines contemporary design with local knowledge, commenting that he views his buildings as social entities as much as physical objects. Through using locally sourced and often recycled materials, his designs are not only environmentally sensitive but also reduce building costs. Prawoto's buildings are usually more modest in scale and therefore require less specialist training making them more suitable for self-building, a quality that allowed Prawoto to use his expertise in the reconstruction of Ngibikan Village following the 2006 earthquake in Yogyakarta. This project was shortlisted for the 2008-2010 Aga Khan Award. As installation artist, Prawoto. His art installations have been exhibited internationally, including presentations at the 2002 Gwangju Biennale as well as in Australia, Europe and Japan, and commissions by the Esplanade (Singapore) in 2011 and 2012.
