With the first frost of the season due in the next few days it’s time to bring your tender and tropical plants in for the winter,
But if like me you have a Tree fern is that are too big to move follow my step by step guide as to how I keep mine protected from the worst of the weather and outside all year round,

Tree ferns are glorious and bring that wonderful tropical look to the garden they are also incredibly expensive And need specific care especially during the winter

first start by placing A handful or two of fully organic well rotted garden compost or leaf mulch into the crown this will feed and nourish Are Tree fern over the winter, On top of this I place a loose handful of straw or hay this acts as a nice warm hat,

Using hessian sacking or a cotton dust sheet I then wrap the top 18 inches of the tree fern in cloth And tie this on with hessian twine

Your then waiting to see what the weather does if the weather is mild leave the fronds well alone Wow they are green they still have the ability to photosynthesise and feed the plant

If the weather is severe enough for these to be black and off I cut these off once black leaving around 4 to 5 inches of the stem surrounding the centre of the Crown

Each fond is then broken into a “U” And folded over the top of the plant these are then tied on To hold them in place your tree fern should then be able to stay outside and take temperatures down to around -5 or 6

If the Drops below this I will often just throw a towel over the top until the temperature lift again

New fronds Will appear in April and May
