Why do soldiers still use bayonets?

Well sure tradition play a role but there’s a few more practical reasons. The first is its use as a last resort. Unlike your rifle, a bayonet can’t jam or fail to fire. If you’re fighting in close quarters and experience a stoppage or run out of ammo you may not have time to pull out your pistol or resolve the stoppage, so having a bayonet may just save your life.

But in truth most soldiers don’t have them equipped on their rifles in the majority of modern day combat as most fighting is done at range. On top of that, the advantages you get from having a bayonet whilst clearing a building are often offset by the extra length it adds to your rifle.

So the other reason for them is psychological. This works two ways, when used in training it can help a soldier teach soldiers to channel their aggression and get over their fear of attacking.

But it can also scare the enemy. In 2011 the last recorded bayonet charge took place . Corporal Jones and his men were in the middle of an ambush when he ordered his men to fix bayonets and charge at the enemy.

This unexpected move scared them, causing them to retreat, giving time for the rest of his platoon to arrive. This won him the Military Cross for bravery.

Lastly Bayonets are just kind of useful, the ones used by the British army have a rope cutter, bottle opener, saw blade and a handle allowing it to be used as a fighting blade. So although it’s unlikely you’ll use it in combat, at the very least, its a handy tool to have in your kit.
