Divorce and Slavery in Islam: Summary of Dr. Kecia Ali's Sexual Ethics & Islam (Chs. 2 & 3) | WTP?!

Описание к видео Divorce and Slavery in Islam: Summary of Dr. Kecia Ali's Sexual Ethics & Islam (Chs. 2 & 3) | WTP?!

In this episode, we discuss some of the key points of chs. 2 and 3 of Dr. Kecia Ali's book "Sexual Ethics & Islam: Feminist Reflections on Qur'an, Hadith, and Jurisprudence." The specific topics are divorce and (sexual) slavery, which covers: different types of divorce in Islam (khul' isn't the only one for women!), the unethical nature of talaaq as allowed to men (in fiqh, not in Islam - the two should not be conflated!), sexual slavery or fiqhi rights for men to enslave people and be sexually involved with the women they enslave (we call that rape), the reasons why historical/past ideas of slavery remain relevant to contemporary issues of ethics for Muslims, and a whole bunch of patriarchy and male entitlement in both of these topics as historical jurists understand these issues.

Fun facts provided occasionally as well.
