This episode features a conversation with Mark Colwell, director of broadband operations at Mission Telecom, a non-profit telecom provider and grantmaker; as well as Dylan Zajac, the founder and executive director of Computers 4 People (C4P), a non-profit organization that Dylan founded in 2019 – when he was still in high school – that provides refurbished computers and digital skills training to individuals in need.

We discuss the background on both organizations and how they sustain their non-profit efforts to connect communities in need to high-speed broadband, as well as the history of their partnership – including a new effort to distribute low-cost broadband through 5G hotspots.

Announced earlier this month, Mission Telecom and C4P have kicked off a nationwide launch of their Shield 5G Home Hotspot. The unlocked hotspot, developed by C4P in partnership with Mission Telecom, is designed to provide affordable service for low-income households. The device, available for pre-order, is priced at $149 and monthly service, provided by Mission Telecom (via T-Mobile's network), is $14.89 a month.
