Just by chance, on PBS I saw one of the developers discussing this product, the BioLite camp stove. This actually has great potential to improve conditions around the world. Billions of people are still cooking over open wood fires. And billions of people still have no access to electricity.

This is a camp stove that also has an attachment that produces electricity from the heat of the fire, which powers a blower which feeds air to the fire, increasing its efficiency incredibly, and in turn producing more electricity. It has a USB port from which you can capture that electricity to charge devices or even power lights.

I immediately thought that it might be useful for smalltime grilling and I think it's going to do the job quite nicely. I think it will be close to or equivalent to the afterburner method (ala Meathead Goldwyn at amazingribs.com

I got the combination package which comes with a detachable grill, a cooking pot, and an LED USB light.

I also wondered whether it would adequately heat a Grill Grate, and it appears to do so according to my preliminary tests with my infrared thermometer. You use basically whatever what is laying around the yard, or any other "food safe" wood or biomass. A lot of people are using twigs, but I had some pieces of firewood that I chopped into usable chunks. I think the chunks will last a lot longer than twigs, but still with the blower I found that I needed to feed the fire regularly.

The manufacturer does not recommend putting anything other than food on the grill however. I do think that the Grill Grates, being aluminum, are light enough so that it should be okay. At least using only one.

An alternative is just to put a small cast-iron, or carbon steel skillet on the stove. I am quite sure it will get unbelievably blazing hot. And I think the stainless steel grate that it came with will be just fine.

I was so excited on my first use of it that I grabbed a camera and shot a little video to show you.
