In February 2020, the Black Crowes reunion arrives: Rich and Chris Robinson, after years of insults and quarrels in the press, make peace and present themselves to the public as if nothing had happened; scheduled tour and the whole mechanism that sets in motion jams due to the pandemic.
In 2021 a celebration arrives, the one for the 30th anniversary of "Shake Your Money Maker" (which in reality was already 31 years old).
In 2022 the Crowes returned to the studio and celebrated the music of others.
"1972 was a watershed moment, some of the greatest rock'n'roll songs ever made came out of that year. To bring our band together in the studio, it was supposed to be a celebration of rock'n'roll. This record is about of love and devotion to something that makes us feel good. We hope it makes fans around the world feel the same …"; these are the words used by Chris Robinson to explain the reasons why the Black Crowes come out with a new work that takes up and revisits six of the songs that marked that period fifty years ago in an important way: just under 30 minutes, not an album but a full-bodied EP of covers with an extended version of the original songs.
Form aside, there is the substance: six songs recorded at the Sunset Sound in Los Angeles, which outline a very specific imaginary, but with some surprises.
On the one hand, the opening with "Rocks off", or the Rolling Stones of "Exile on Main St.", who have always been a point of reference for the group and even something more: at the time of their debut, comparisons abounded.
On the other the Little Feat of "Easy to slip", another tutelary deity of the brothers; curious, in this case, that from the album "Sailin' shoes" they didn't choose "Willin'", perhaps the best-known song of the band and a long time live classic also by the Crowes.
The version "You Wear It Well" by Rod Stewart (from "Never a Dull Moment") is also very beautiful and respectful, which falls on the more acoustic side of the band, as well as the spectacular cover of "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" by the Temptations plays on funk-rock, another soul of the Crowes.
On the other hand, the glam side is unprecedented, frequented with a beautiful version of Bowie's "Moonage Daydream" that takes Rich Robinson's guitars on new paths, but also with "The slider" by T-Rex.
Does the operation work?
Yes, 30 minutes that add little and confirm a lot of what we already knew about the band: even in this incarnation (around the Robinson brothers there are all new musicians) the Black Crowes remain one of the best classic-rock machines around.
An EP that's little more than well-crafted entertainment, but these recordings still bode well for new original music too.
"1972" is not just a nostalgic or pimp operation as one might also think, but an extraordinary opportunity to revisit timeless songs, merging past and present, giving us a formidable snapshot of the state of a band that still has a lot to say.
