Il IV secolo d.C. segnò l’inizio dell’affermazione del Cristianesimo come religione di stato dell’Impero Romano. Allo stesso tempo, a partire dal Concilio Ecumenico di Arles del 314 d.C., iniziò il processo di controllo e di repressione delle diverse Eresie Cristologiche che si manifestarono in tutto il grande territorio dell’Impero. La Questione Cristologica avrebbe animato il Concilio di Nicea del 325, quello di Costantinopoli I del 381 e il successivo Concilio Ecumenico di Efeso I del 431. Le Eresie di Ario, Pelagio e Nestorio sarebbero state le protagoniste di questo dibattito.

The fourth century AD marked the beginning of Christianity's establishment as the state religion of the Roman Empire. At the same time, starting with the Ecumenical Council of Arles in 314 AD, the process of control and repression of the various Christological heresies that manifested themselves throughout the vast territory of the Empire began. The Christological Question would animate the Council of Nicaea in 325, the First Council of Constantinople in 381, and the subsequent First Ecumenical Council of Ephesus in 431. The heresies of Arius, Pelagius, and Nestorius would be the protagonists of this debate.
