The Nations mourns the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the 8th September 2022 at Balmoral Castle, Scotland, age 96.

Queen Elizabeth II’s final journey back to London began from Balmoral on a 6-hour cortege journey to the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh on the evening of Sunday, 11th September.

She then continued her journey for a lying in state at St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh the next morning, 12th September, guarded by Vigils from The Royal Company of Archers.

On the 13th September, her coffin, accompanied by her daughter, The Princess Royal, was flown from Edinburgh to RAF Northolt. Upon arrival, the coffin has been conveyed to Buckingham Palace, her official residence.

On the afternoon of Wednesday, 14th September, her coffin was in Procession on a Gun Carriage of The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery from Buckingham Palace to the Palace of Westminster.

The Queen will lie is State at Westminster Hall from 14th September until the morning of her State Funeral on 19th Septembe 2022, at Westminster Abbey. After the funeral, the coffin will travel on State Hearse in procession to St George Chapel, Windsor Castle.

During the Lying-in-State period, Her Majesty's coffin rests on a raised platform, catafalque,in the middle of Westminster Hall. Each corner of the platform is guarded around the clock by units from the Sovereign's Bodyguard, Foot Guards or the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment.

The Queen's children on the 14th September and grandchildren on the 16th September have honoured her with a vigil and joined the guard over the coffin - a tradition which has been called the Vigil of the Princes.

Hundreds of thousands of people, including myself, have gathered at London’s medieval Westminster Hall to pay respects to Queen Elizabeth II, whose coffin will lie in state.

The closed coffin is draped with the Royal Standard, a flag representing the sovereign and the UK. It is adorned with royal regalia including the orb, the sceptre and the bejewelled Imperial State Crown — the same one the queen wore for her 1953 coronation.

The queue route stretches from Victoria Tower Gardens across Lambeth Bridge down to Westminster Bridge, then veering right then left down Belvedere Road, through Jubilee Gardens back to South Bank and along to the Tate.

Westminster Hall, which dates back to 1099, is in the Palace of Westminster and is the oldest building on the parliamentary estate.

The tradition of lying in state stretches back to the
17th century when Stuart sovereigns lay in state for a number of days.

It was Edward VII set the modern tradition of royal lying in state in Westminster Hall. He lay in state in 1910, as did King George V in 1936 and King George VI, the Queen's father, in 1952.

George VI was the last sovereign who died before Elizabeth II.
