The Southern Railway 4501 is renowned for her legendary status in the steam preservation era, being one of the first ever steam excursion stars in the United States. The beautifully restored locomotive is now under the watchful eye of the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, often tasked with pulling the "Summerville Steam Special." This 100 mile round trip begins in Chattanooga and winds through the Georgian countryside, tracing the route of both the Southern Railway and Central of Georgia Railroad. Southern Railway 4501 is a 2-8-2 Ms-1 Mikado, built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1911, designed to haul heavy freight across the Southeastern United States. After decades of service and a decline in American Railroads, the 4501 was sold to the Kentucky & Tennessee Railway, arriving there in 1948. She would wear the number 12 on the K&T, hauling coal for another 15 years, with retirement coming in 1963. With an uncertain future, the 4501 was saved by preservationist Paul Merriman and brought to Chattanooga, Tennessee, where it became the cornerstone of the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum and the newly formed Southern Steam Program. By 1966, 4501 was returned to Southern Railway green and became the first star of a new groundbreaking steam program, making her the first locomotive to do so in the modern era. Over the years, she has undergone several restorations, most notably in 2014, when she was selected for the Norfolk Southern’s 21st Century Steam initiative. While that program no longer exists, 4501 remains operational and continues to be a staple of steam preservation in the United States.
