Tomato Hornworm Control - Organic Treatment
In this episode, I will show you how I solve the hornworm problem in my vegetable garden with homemade organic spray.
A few days ago, I noticed that the bottom leaves on my tomato plants are chewed up by something. It took me a while, but I was able to find the tomato hornworms doing quite a bit of damage to my plants. These green caterpillars are very hard to detect because they are the same green color as the tomato leaves.
You can handpick them and move them to another area, but because I do not have another leafy area to relocate them, I had to destroy them.

Here is how I make my organic spray for 1 gallon of water:
1 teaspoon of Cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon of garlic
1teaspoon of dish-wash soap
I put all the ingredients in a blender with 1/4 of a cup of water, mix it well, strain it, and let it sit for 1 hour. Next, I pour the mix in the water, mix it well again an pour it in the spray bottle.
In the evening, I spray the underside of 1 of my tomato plants and wait for 24 hours to make sure the plant is reacting well to the mixture.
The next evening I spray the rest of my tomato plants. You can use it to control the hornworms on your pepper plants as well. I sprayed again a few days later just in case there were any hornworm eggs on the leaves. This is a natural repellent that will not harm your plants when applied properly.
You can also use flashlight at night and find the caterpillars by flashing the light underneath the leaves of the affected plants.
The best prevention is to check your plants every day for damaged leaves so you can control the tomato hornworms at earliest stages.
In Arizona, the green tomato hornworms usually emerge in late spring and early summer.
