Biomolecular Thermodynamics and Calorimetry
Speaker: Chris Johnson, MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, UK
2024 Introduction to Biophysical Techniques

The LMB Biophysics Facility houses a wide range of state-of-the-art and in-house built instruments that enable the molecular characterisation of macromolecular size, shape, mass, stability, binding affinity, dynamics and interaction kinetics.

The facility is primarily intended for hands-on research by students, postdocs, and group leaders, who prepare samples and make measurements. Biophysics supports users in advice on experimental techniques and results, training and in collaborative research.

In this video Chris explains the thermodynamics of biological equilibria including the relationship between binding constants, free energy, and entropy and enthalpy to enable users to understand how isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) can be used to understand biological processes. The practicalities and applications of each technique are discussed and how data should be interpreted.

The Biophysics Facility is headed by Stephen McLaughlin, supported by Chris Johnson and Chris Batters.

About the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB):
The LMB is one of the world's leading research institutes. Discoveries and inventions developed at the LMB, for example DNA sequencing and methods to determine the structure of proteins, have revolutionised all areas of biology. Our scientists work to advance understanding of biological processes at the molecular level. This information will help us to understand the workings of complex systems, such as the immune system and the brain, and solve key problems in human health.
