2.1 Atomic Theory and Structure & Introduction to the Periodic Table of the Elements | Chemistry

Описание к видео 2.1 Atomic Theory and Structure & Introduction to the Periodic Table of the Elements | Chemistry

Chad covers the basics of atomic theory and structure of matter in this lesson. He covers the important contributions to atomic theory and structure by four chemistry stalwarts:
John Dalton, the father of atomic theory
JJ Thompson discovered the electron
Robert Millikan's oil drop experiment in which he discovered the charge and mass of an electron
Ernest Rutherford used gold foil and alpha particles to discover the nucleus

Next, isotope symbols and isotope notation are explained and Chad shows how to determine the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons. The atomic number is equal to the number of protons, and the difference between the mass number and the atomic number is equal to the number of neutrons. Finally, the charge can then be used to find the number of electrons.

Chad also explains and works an example of how to use isotope masses and relative abundances to calculate an element's atomic weight (aka atomic mass).

Finally, the lesson is concluded with an introduction to the Periodic Table of the Elements. Chad identifies groups and periods and their significance. He shows how to identify metals, nonmetals, and metalloids and identifies 4 of the groups: the Alkali Metals, Alkaline Earth Metals, Halogens, and Noble Gases.
