Описание к видео Code Bootcamp vs. College/University | Which is Right For You?

There are many ways to get a job as a software engineer
They include things like self-learning, going the traditional college path, going to a code bootcamp, or learning on the job.
I will be discussing the path of code bootcamp and college in this video
I thought would still reference that some people do learn on their own whether it be on the job or not
People could also learn how to code from a mentor at their current company
For example, I know someone who is currently in a QA role at a company, but wants to transition into more of a developer role. (though he is in school for Computer science)
My bias is that I am from both college and a code bootcamp
Pros of going to code bootcamp
generally cheaper
I have not seen a code bootcamp be more than $20,000 however it is generally accepted that a 4 year university will be more than that especially if you are in the US and it is out of state
Could be lower than $20,000 if you go to community college – less prestige
According to my source, the average cost of a code bootcamp is around $13,000

This might seem like a lot, but it is better than the alternative of flipping burgers at your nearest BurgerMcDonalds
It also tends to pay itself many times over if it gets you a decently paying job as a software engineer
It won't be that hard to eventually find a 6 figure salary even if you don't start out with one
generally learn more of what you will actually use on the job
In general, the code bootcamps do better if they teach modern technologies, algorithms, and data structures
some bootcamps however only teach these rarely used data structures and algorithms
The intent of these kind of bootcamps is to get you the job and not for you to do well on the job
These hiring managers and bootcamp instructors figure that if you can memorize some data structures and algorithms that you will do well on the job
For example I learned web development in learning React, and server side technologies
shorter
The average time period of a bootcamp is around 12 weeks
It could be much shorter like 9 weeks or much longer like 30 weeks which is like half a year
Overall though, this is much shorter than how long you will be spending in college
Most people spend around 4 years in college, however it could take longer or shorter depending on the required coursework and how hard you are willing to work
some bootcamps have a guarantee of getting a job at the end
These types of bootcamps are usually not worth the cost of training in terms of the value of the training though
Pros of going to college
The experience
People think of college as their glory days and when people peak
This is why many people go on to graduate and advanced degree – they don't want to enter the real world
I personally had a lot of fun and did some awesome things in college
I build robots, joined clubs and had cool outings
I know many people join Fraternities/ Sororities that they find enjoyable for some time
can't do that with a bootcamp
Though in my opinion most people join those types of organizations to drink alcohol and meet the members of the opposite sex
More well rounded
Even though my degree was in physics UF made me take courses in a language
At first I wanted to learn French, but I failed that so I took Spanish
You learn more math in College which could help with some mathematical programming problems
there are many interview questions that could be answered much faster if you knew the proper mathematics of the solution
Networking
This one is probably underrated
My school gave us the opportunity to talk to many different businesses and interview at them to get internships and stuff
Places like Microsoft, Google, Amazon etc
Though the lines were long many people got internships at such places
Getting an internship is a pretty much guaranteed job outside of college since it shows that you have some worth
some business even hire you once you graduate if they liked you enough in the internship
You could even make a lot of friends in your classes/team projects that could get you a job down the line once they rise in their respective companies
Note – these friends likely won't be able to get you job immediately since they will be a newcomer to their company for some time
more academic approach – more theory
This one is subjective. Some people don't think the theory helps that much on the job or getting into it
The learning is spread out over a longer period of time so ideas are more likely to stick
