Joseph and His Brothers – Summary
Joseph and his brothers’ story are a powerful narrative found in Genesis chapters 37–50 in the Bible. It tells of Joseph, the favored son of Jacob (also called Israel), and his journey from betrayal to triumph.
Joseph was the eleventh of twelve sons and the firstborn of Jacob’s beloved wife, Rachel. Because Jacob loved Joseph more than his other sons, he gave him a special multicolored coat. This favoritism caused deep jealousy among his brothers, especially when Joseph shared dreams that suggested he would one day rule over them.
Driven by envy, the brothers plotted against him. They first threw him into a pit, then sold him into slavery. They deceived their father by dipping Joseph’s coat in goat's blood, making it appear he was killed by a wild animal.
Joseph was taken to Egypt, where he became a servant in Potiphar’s house. After being falsely accused by Potiphar’s wife, he was imprisoned. But God was with Joseph, giving him the gift of interpreting dreams. Eventually, he interpreted Pharaoh’s dreams and was elevated to second in command of Egypt.
A severe famine struck the region, and Joseph’s brothers came to Egypt to buy food. They did not recognize him at first. After testing their character, Joseph revealed his identity, forgave them, and reunited with his family.
The story ends with Joseph bringing his father Jacob and all his family to Egypt, where they prospered. The tale of Joseph and his brothers is a rich narrative of jealousy, betrayal, resilience, forgiveness, and divine providence.
God's creation is often understood in religious and philosophical terms as the entirety of the universe and everything within it, crafted by a divine being. In many belief systems, especially within monotheistic traditions like Christianity, Islam, and Judaism, God is seen as the Creator of all things, including the earth, heavens, living beings, and even the laws of nature. This concept emphasizes that everything in existence is a product of divine will and power.
