This film focuses on the history of the City of London (the Square Mile), its economic growth, institutions, administration, buildings and future with special reference to the Barbican scheme. The film illustrates the major part taken by local government in the physical and social redevelopment of London.

The film shows areas of London within the Square Mile around landmarks such as St Bartholomews Hospital, the London Stock Exchange, Lloyds of London and the Port of London.
First shots in Black and White of London in the Blitz, the City on fire, firefighters on the streets of London tackling the blazes, redevelopment of the City after the war, colour footage then includes ships along the Thames, the docks, the Port of London, commuters on London Bridge, trains into London, streets of London around the Bank of England, insurance and commodities in London, PLA warehouses, markets of London, road improvements, Holborn viaduct, Blackfriars, Paternoster Square, the Barbican, newspaper offices, new offices, Golden Lane estate, open spaces, parks, City of London Police, the Guildhall, schools in the City, St Barts hospital and the Lord Mayors Show.
