In the program notes. professor Tonsing wrote the following:

"Opus 17 in its present form was first performed by professors Dalrymple and Carter this spring. The third movement was first to composed; it started as a setting of Shakespear's fiftieth Sonnet and quickly changed to a work for string orchestra or organ. The other movements were settings of words by Robin McKenzie from Amarillo. Although the poems were about sadness and loneliness, I remember best her wonderful grin."

Funny story about his film role. In the spring of 1978, I was in Professor Tonsing's freshman music theory class. One of the executives on the film had ties to Oklahoma State University, and decided to film some of the scenes in Stillwater. They put out a casting call to recruit locals to serve as extras in the film. Professor Tonsing applied and was given the role of news stand employee. The director wanted him to have a maniacal look in his eyes, so immediately before the scene was shot, she said something very insulting to him. Then, "action". The scene was filmed on a weekend. The following Monday, he discussed the experience in class. One of the students said that the director probably insulted him to intensify his angry look, and professor Tonsing agreed!
