14 IADS for Indian Navy

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has awarded a major contract to Mahindra Defence Systems Limited (MDS) worth Rs.1349.95 Cr for the manufacturing of 14 Integrated Anti-Submarine Warfare Defence Suite (IADS) for modern warships of Indian Navy. Ultra Electronics in partnership with Mahindra Defence Systems Limited, will be developing IADS. The contract worth approximately £60 million to Ultra. Deliveries are due to commence in 2024 and to be completed by 2030.

Mahindra & Ultra Tie up

Back in 2015 Mahindra defense had tied up with UK based firm ULTRA Group for the development of IADS, however what is not clear if Mahindra defense has the complete intellectual rights for the development of it. But going via the press release Mahindra defense seems to have all the rights to manufacture & develop the IADS.

DRDO has also developed its version of IADS as well, However, Mahindra defense has come up as a winner in the competitive bids along with other Indian companies via an open tender in which the systems fielded were put through detailed trials at sea to prove their capability. This gives quite confidence in the IADS system of Mahindra Defense.

Need of IADS

In deep blue waters when warship is patrolling there is a silent killer lurking deep below the surface and waiting to pounce when they have chance. The submarines can launch torpedoes on the surface vessels. Even surface warships can launch torpedoes. This is where the Integrated Anti-submarine Warfare Defense Suite i.e. IADS comes to rescue. IADS provides a powerful multi-sensor ASW capability using an in-line active and passive towed Low Frequency Variable Depth Sonar as well as Torpedo Defence with embedded detection, classification & localisation to defeat detected Torpedo threats.

IADS components

Mahindra's IADS includes 14 types of components. Some of the main IADS components includes torpedo defense system, horizontal projector array, hull mounted sonar, towed low frequency source, anti-torpedo decoys and a software for monitoring and a user interface. The entire system sensors are monitored using single platform from the software provided by Mahindra defense. The different types of sonars of IADS include capability of detecting underwater threats such as torpedo, underwater mines and neutralize them. All these action can be performed with the help of single software platform. It can also share the data with friendly ship having same type of IADS system.
